I wasn't sure I would be able to wish you a happy birthday this year as a tornado came through my neighborhood on Sunday. My home was undamaged, but we had to evacuate due to the destruction. I had planned on sending the birthday wishes through Tammy Hayes' site, and it looks like I'll just make it; electricity was back yesterday.
I am back in my home, my family is safe, even the pets down to the fish, and it it by God's mercy that it is so. I know you are a man of faith, so when I say that I firmly believe that an angel guarded my house and sons, you will understand.
If I am a bit emotional, please forgive me, but I have been telling everyone that I love them and hugging them since Sunday. I am grateful for so much.
I'm also grateful for your career and your talent as I have watched your performances back to when I was young and imprinted on Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin. They were my heroes then, and now I still carry them around in my heart. When we had to leave our house in a hurry, one son grabbed his laptop, the other his guitar, and I grabbed my Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin action figures.
You can see the impact of your career on so many lives throughout the decades. I went into law enforcement in the military because of "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." Its message of making a difference in the world around you stuck with me and is still shaping who I am today.
I had the wonderful pleasure of seeing you in, "The Exonerated," off Broadway a few years ago. I met you backstage and you signed my Playbill and posed with me for a picture. It meant the world to me.
So, Mr, Vaughn, I hope you have a happy and blessed birthday today, and know you are loved and respected by your legion of fans. And do yourself a favor; hug every friend and family member tightly and tell them that you love them. That will be the best birthday present you'll ever have.
Sincerely,
Kelly Pennell
